A Step into the Past is a 2001 Hong Kong television series produced by TVB and based on Huang Yi's novel of the same Chinese title. The series tells the story of a 21st-century Hong Kong VIPPU officer who travels back in time to the Warring States period of ancient China. He is involved in a number of important historical events that leads to the first unification of China under the Qin Dynasty. The series' first original broadcast ran from 15 October to 7 December 2001 on the TVB Jade network in Hong Kong.

Season 1

Episode 1
Secret agent HONG SIU LUNG and his colleagues are to provide security for the Exhibition of the First Emperor’s Bodyguard. His colleagues find that one life-size model of the soldiers very much looks like LUNG. LUNG claims that he can make a date with CHING, a stunningly beautiful Public Relations Officer and he even places a bet on this with his colleagues. CHING, however, turns him down. Tycoon LEE SIU CHIU is officiating at the Exhibition, during which a fanatic who is disguised as a journalist has sneaked into the exhibition centre. He has brought along with him loads of explosives. Both CHIU and CHING are held hostage. Luckily LUNG is there and he stops the crazy man just in time. CHING complains that LUNG has no intention of marrying her and that he has been looking for various excuses to reject her for the past 7 years. CHING makes a final attempt to propose marriage to LUNG.… ...

Episode 2
YAO, a hitman, is in a fight with his enemies and LUNG has rescued him by chance. LUNG realises he is now in the Chiu Empire and thus asks YAO to lead him back to the Qin Empire. YAO has taken him to the city of Handan instead. This night, LUNG follows YAO to a hut and overhears YIM PING and the people inside discussing how to kill YUEN JUNG. There LUNG also finds out that YAO is in fact a girl. YAO and LUNG see an old man in the street, who is being teased by a gang of knights. LUNG helps to drive the knights off. YAO wonders if that old man is JUNG. PING is going to poison JUNG but LUNG and YAO have turned up in time and spoiled PING’s plan. It is found that JUNG is a descendent of the Mo Sect. PING has been trying to steal one treasured object from JUNG, with which he can order people around. YAO suggests JUNG teach LUNG the renowned Mozhe Sword Techniques and JUNG promises. While JUNG is teaching LUNG, PING comes along.

Episode 3
JUNG and PING have had a terrible fight and both of them have got seriously hurt. YAO kills PING in order to get a special award. Before JUNG dies, he has passed a wooden sword and his treasured object on to LUNG. LUNG disapproves of YAO’s greed and selfishness, and thus decides to leave her. LUNG works as a blacksmith but can earn just a little money. Out of the blue, someone has prepared excellent food and accommodation for him and he knows for sure it is all arranged by YAO. By chance LUNG has assisted GREY BEARD to catch FONG, a member of the WOOs, and her bodyguard TAO. GREY BEARD is actually a thief and is hired to steal an emerald named ‘He’. LUNG is finally aware of the fact and releases FONG and TAO immediately. LUNG discovers that the emerald is used to save YING JING, the heir to the throne of the Qin Empire and therefore promises to help TAO to recover the emerald.… ...

Episode 4
LUNG knows CHUN is going to keep the genuine emerald. He thus exchanges the genuine emerald for the fake one. TAO brings LUNG back to the WOO’s Castle to meet his master WOO YING YUEN. FONG is not happy with LUNG as she thinks he has spoken ill of CHUN. LUNG explains that he swapped the genuine emerald for the fake one just for long-term advantages. YUEN has no choice but to try to believe it. CHUN presents the fake emerald to MUK, which makes MUK thrilled to bits. With his quick wit, LUNG has successfully proven the WOO’s innocence in front of EMPEROR CHIU, making MUK furious. YUEN thinks highly of LUNG for he is so clever that he can save the WOOs without doing YING JING any harm. But FONG is just so jealous of LUNG. PRINCE POON, the son of PRINCESS ANN, is teasing a girl in the street. Meanwhile LUNG passes by and has stopped him and given him a good telling-off.… ...

Episode 5
MUK blames CHUN for having not killed LUNG during the fight. He is going to take LUNG’s life in the forthcoming football match. YUEN can see that LUNG is really good at football and thus asks him to help train his guards, which makes FONG and her brother WAI very unhappy. FONG is going to play a trick on LUNG, and for this matter, she orders CHUN to buy some medicine for her. CHUN has bought her some poison instead. LUNG sneaks into JING’s house to have a look. There he meets TAO. LUNG claims that he is a secret agent working for LUI BUTT WAI, a prominent official of the Qin Empire. YUEN doubts it. Outwardly LUNG is busy training a group of footballers but in fact he is training a number of knights who will be skilful enough to rescue JING. FONG puts the medicine (the poison actually) into the soup for LUNG. She has carelessly dropped the bowl and the soup just spreads over the floor. A dog comes near and takes a sip of the soup.… ...

Episode 6
FONG can finally pass the screening test. She then urges LUNG to jump down the cliff. LUNG does what she says, which scares her half to death. FONG discovers she has been cheated by LUNG and flies into a fury. She even calls him ‘Bastard’. LUNG insists on teaching the modern football skills but both FONG and WAI doubt if it works. The day of the MUK versus WOO football match finally comes. POON and PRINCE KA have a bet on the outcome. POON’s mother ANN appears and everyone out there gets stunned by her beauty. TAK mocks POON, saying that his mother is too sexy. POON finds such comment very offensive and is outraged. LUNG’s team is winning in the first half of the match but CHUN means to break the rules. LUNG finds an excuse to take a rest. He then gets out of the court and joins TAO. The two of them immediately go to JING’s house to save him. Unfortunately they are trapped and do not succeed. Surprisingly, LUNG meets YAO there.… ...

Episode 7
MUK learns from CHUN that LUNG is quite a randy guy and has thought of a plan to deal with him. LUNG meets ANN in the market. Suddenly ANN’s horse goes crazy and LUNG has stopped it just in time. LUNG thinks there must be some strange goings-on. LUNG gives FONG a jade hairgrip, which makes her thrilled. But as soon as she finds out that ANN has asked him out for a date, she gets outraged and throws the hairgrip at LUNG. LUNG picks up the broken hairgrip and leaves. ANN is trying every possible way to seduce LUNG. Meanwhile, POON gets into the room and sees the scene. He is furious thinking that they are just too shameless. ANN instantly gives POON a slap. ANN believes LUNG is a real gentleman since he never takes sexual advantages of her. He did not even touch her when she was drunk. FONG thinks that LUNG and ANN have already had sex and thus burns with jealousy.… ...

Episode 8
POON appoints a few gangsters to attack LUNG but out of his expectation, LUNG can successfully drive out all of them. MUK tries to bribe LUNG with pretty women and grand mansions but LUNG turns him down without hesitation. MUK gets outraged. ANN asks LUNG to become POON’s master, which surprises LUNG a lot. FONG has mistakenly damaged the orchids that ANN gave LUNG. To make it up to LUNG, she turns to SINN for some new orchids. SINN reveals that she is marrying either the Prince of the Hon Empire or the Prince of the Ngai Empire. ANN wants POON to be LUNG’s apprentice but POON refuses. LUNG shows POON all his power, making POON so amazed. POON now looks up to LUNG a lot and really wants to learn from him. LUNG has got back the repaired hairgrip. TAO tells him that FONG has just sent him some orchids. TAO points out that FONG seems to be very fond of LUNG, which makes LUNG a bit worried. A war-horse is poisoned to death.… ...
