Virtues of Harmony is a long-running sitcom from Hong Kong, lasting 322 episodes with two direct seasons. Produced by Tsui Yu On, the sitcom was a TVB production and aired five days a week from September 17, 2001 to December 28, 2002. The series chronicles the comical events and life of the Kam household, a rich family during a prosperous time in the Ming Dynasty of China. The series was inspired by the 2000 TVB comedy drama Colourful Life. Originally planned to be an 150-episode sitcom, an extra 200 episodes were added due to the sitcom's rating success. After the episode finale, a spin-off sequel, Virtues of Harmony II was released in 2003, as well as a spin-off musical, which starred the same cast.

Season 1

Episode 1
Once upon a time, there is a well-known restaurant in Resonance Town named, Honey Cave. The owner is a widow named CHI; however, she is not an ordinary housewife. Because she is a former renowned thief with excellent stance of martial art. But in spite of this, she is also a generous and open-minded person. CHI has triplets, two boys, NIN and YUI and a daughter, YEK. NIN used to be working as a government official in the capital, but he has offended the princess and has been demoted. He opposes the inconsiderable decision of princess, who spends a huge sum of money and a great force of labor on the construction of lake; therefore, he makes joke on the princess through poem.

Episode 2
The princess has absolute right to demote NIN then; hence, NIN is sent back to his hometown at last. Despite the banter of his younger brother’s wife, YUK LO, NIN is pleased to return home actually. When NIN arrives his new court office on his first day of duty, he is so surprised and feels pity for its shatter ness. The first day of duty passes away rapidly, NIN returns home for dinner. But he finishes the meal quickly and goes out again. Everyone feels that NIN acts strangely and worries about him. They follow him to the court office and are shock to find NIN hangs up on the ridge.

Episode 3
LIM FU realizes that Uncle CHEUNG has a newborn child recently. And, he is curious to find out the reason, why Uncle CHEUNG can still have baby in such an old age. Since Uncle CHEUNG tells FU that it was the blessing of the goddess of Mercy; therefore, FU seeks for the blessing too and purchases a statue of the goddess of Mercy which costs one hundred pounds. Unfortunately, FU meets his enemy CHUEN when he returns home. In order to avoid causing damage on the statue, FU protects it cautiously. CHUEN notices about it and makes fun on him intentionally. FU is furious and determines to take revenge on him later. Since CHUEN spends a lot of time in blocking the way of FU, CHUEN is late for the delivery of pork to Honey Cave on the other hand. Thus, CHUEN provides an excuse for FU to terminate the purchase contract eventually.

Episode 4
The customers complain to CHI that the quality of pork drops significantly after changing the pork supplier. Therefore, CHI decides to terminate the new contract with hawker KWAI. In return, KWAI requests twenty thousand pounds as compensation for breaching the contract. Under such circumstances, CHI has no other alternatives but uses tricky way to cheat KWAI’s wife and destroys the contract. Hawker KWAI intends to raise the price of pork massively while he does not know that the contract is destroyed already. He knows the truth and leaves with anger.

Episode 5
Parents love their kids whatever the mistakes they commit. Although princess has runaway from the palace, the king does not want to disappoint her and carries on the construction of lotus pond. He orders all the government officials to scripture a statue of princess and place at the ponds in each town; hence, the picture of princess is sent to Resonance Town also. But it turns out to be a mess when CHUEN and FU spoil and damage the picture carelessly. The portrait of princess can hardly recognize and the craftsmen have to blind guess now. On the other hand, the untamed princess runs away from the blind marriage and comes to Resonance Town with her subordinate, YUEN. She is very angry when she finds her scripture is so ugly; thus, she breaks the scripture in rage.

Episode 6
Since the princess changes her name as KUNG YAN SO; no one knows about her real identity. Hence, she is charged and punished by NIN to carry out social work in the community. It is a tough job for a woman to do construction work, especially the princess. However, the princess has a chance to realize the hard time of her citizens directly. It is not just about the hard work; YAN SO also has difficulties in adjusting her request on food. At last, she finds the fast food shop owns by CHUEN and orders a lot of food at once. After finishing the meal, YUEN asks YAN SO to leave early because he knows that they do not have enough money to pay the bill. Therefore, YAN SO trades in her belongings at the pawnshop; while the receipt is dropped and picked up by CHI coincidentally.

Episode 7
It is perhaps that destination that brings YAN SO to meet CHI. CHI misunderstands that YAN SO is the daughter of her lifesaver and accommodates YAN SO in her house. The fake identity has brought the princess a new chapter of life now. Due to the prestige dressing of SO and YUEN, the family KIM is curious about their background indeed. One day, YEK, LO and KATE feel so boring; therefore, invite SO to play mahjong together. However, SO commits a spell in the game, which will bring bad luck.

Episode 8
Since then, strange things happen and everyone accuses SO for bringing the bad luck. Their assumption is unscientific to NIN; hence, he decides to investigate. He discovers that SO is suffering from sleep-walking and creates the mystery instead. Apart, YUI tends to find a fighting a cricket near the stream. He finds MEI who injures and faints by a poison snake. At the same time, a leech hurts YUI also. YUI throws the leech away quickly and it just drops at the wounds of MEI by accident. YUI runs away in a hurry and drops his jade ring.
